A Few Notes on the HP Mini 110
Last night at the Christmas party, Fog Creek gave everyone an HP Mini 110 netbook.  Very cool.  Once again I’m reminded at how lucky I am to work with those guys. Out of the box, these guys come with an Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 150GB hard drive, and a copy of Windows 7 Starter Edition.  It’s a great box for web surfing, and the battery life is amazing.  I’ve had it off of...

Task Management for Sysadmins
This post over at the SysAdvent blog got me thinking so much that my face nearly melted.  The author proposes that sysadmin teams begin implementing Kanban as a general task strategy.  It looks like a fantastic choice because it pegs expectations to reality. I am not entirely sure that I could fully graft it to our small team, but this gives me a great place to start.  Even more so than usual, I...

Last night I attended the Fog Creek holiday party, which was fantastic.  Great food, great people, and a great parting gift.  I also have a slight hangover - my first in a long time.  It is not proper to mix whiskey and wine.  That should be a commandment. My landlord has informed us that we will be without water for at least 24 hours while they repair some pipes downstairs. According to the...

To go along with the previous post, this is the official video version of “Stable Song” by Death Cab for Cutie.   I was choked up after watching it for the first time.  Amazing, really.

ugh, server failure at CrystalTech. And apparently their normal backup process silently fails at backing up VM images. For those that want to fire off a few snarky comments about Jeff’s loss, go ahead and make one, but then please do yourself and your customers a favor by examining your own backup strategy. I’ll leave it at that.

Early Resolutions
Next year is about restriction and reduction, so that I may focus on what’s important.  Some ideas: No more new books, at least those of the non-fictional variety.  I have way too many under-studied texts on my shelves, and need to soak up what they offer instead of running after the next idea that catches my mind Get rid of books that I don’t need.  I listed over 100 books this...

On Getting Things Done
When you have two newborns in the house and you still wanna kick ass and take names, you have to set goals if you wanna make a dent. Today’s must-do tasks: floss teeth clip finger nails After having heroically met those challenges, I know that nothing can stop me.

Yehuda Katz on Rails 3 →
While I tip my hat to the Rails team, I’m just not feeling it.  I remember when I first got my hands on version 0.13, and was stunned at how clear and light it all felt.  Not so much these days. Anymore I prefer Sinatra.

We Can Grow Meat Now? →
griffmusic: Well, scientists have artificially grown some meat. I’m sort of torn by this whole thing because it does seem weird to eat artificial meat. I’m looking forward to it though. The implications of being able to grow meat cheaply and quickly in a laboratory can lead to a cure for world hunger. As the population of the world increases at an exponential rate, the ability to...

ruby through apache... many hours later
awongh: Now I’m thinking that it would have gone easier with the other bundled webservers that are supposed to come with rails? Mongrel? or I was also seeing instructions for lighttpd? Yeah, Ruby deployment is a giant pain in the arse.  A typical solution is to use Mongrel, and if Apache is up front, proxy back to it with mod_proxy.  It works well, but still, what happened to the good old days...
